A forever home gets a forever garden

How we transformed a waterlogged lawn into a beautiful, productive sanctuary

Before

Beautiful home, shame about the garden

When Chris and Leoni called me last autumn, they’d just settled into their dream home, a beautifully converted bungalow in Canley, one of Coventry’s most sought-after locations.

You know that feeling when you find the perfect property? Everything clicks. That’s exactly what happened here.

But whilst the house was spot-on, the garden told a different story.

A patio with a table and chairs

Great bones, but missing its soul

Walking through their garden when I first visited them, I could immediately see its potential.

The previous owners had made sensible structural choices—a well-proportioned patio and two handsome oak pergolas that created genuine architectural presence. But beyond these features lay a vast expanse of lawn that simply wasn’t working.

The space felt disconnected, lacking the character and purpose that would make it truly complement their investment. For a couple who’d chosen Canley specifically for its village atmosphere and mature landscape setting, the garden wasn’t living up to the property’s potential.

The brief was refreshingly straightforward: create a garden that serves as a beautiful backdrop from the house, incorporate productive elements like raised beds and fruit trees, design for low maintenance without sacrificing visual impact, and make the most of the stunning borrowed landscape from neighbouring mature trees.

The mystery of the waterlogged lawn

During my initial site analysis, I discovered something that would fundamentally change our approach. Despite the garden’s sloping terrain—which should naturally drain well, the lawn was completely waterlogged. This wasn’t just poor drainage; something more significant was happening.

The mystery was solved when I chatted to Gaius Holmes of Veridian Outdoor my trusted landscaper on this project. He had grown up in this neighbourhood and immediately identified the issue: an underground spring from the adjacent property was feeding directly into the garden.

This is precisely why professional garden design matters. A less experienced designer might have simply worked around the symptoms, creating a garden that would struggle and potentially fail within a few seasons.

Fixing the foundations first

Before any design work could begin, we needed to address the fundamental drainage issue by utilising proper water management that would protect the investment long-term:

  • Complete lawn removal and ground preparation
  • Installation of fin drains across the entire garden
  • Strategic ground building using graded gravel and premium topsoil

This infrastructure work isn’t glamorous, but it’s the foundation of any garden that will thrive for decades rather than seasons.

Whilst the ground settled into its new, properly drained state, I developed the design that would transform this space into something genuinely special.

Curved Millboard decking path

The right material for the job

The final design centres around a gracefully curved pathway that draws your eye through the garden, creating natural zones whilst maintaining visual flow. This isn’t decorative meandering, every curve has purpose, revealing different vistas as you move through the space.

Given the ongoing moisture concerns, the pathway material choice was critical.

My original thought was to use natural stone stepping stones, but with the potential for ground movement, these could subside over time. Traditional timber decking would rot quickly in these conditions, so instead, I specified Millboard composite decking laid on their PlasPro joists and beams system.

Millboard was the perfect solution here—completely moisture-resistant, yet flexible enough to create those sinuous curves that make the pathway feel so natural. The composite material will look as good in fifty years as it does today, whilst the raised joist system ensures proper airflow underneath, preventing any moisture issues that might affect other materials.

Productive zone

The productive zone features espalier fruit trees and raised beds positioned to maximise both sun exposure and visual appeal from the house. Too often, productive gardens are treated as separate, utilitarian spaces. Here, they’re integral to the garden’s beauty.

The ornamental areas showcase my philosophy of layered interest. Long, deep borders provide seasonal drama, whilst the central focal bed combines architectural grasses, carefully selected perennials, and structural shrubs for year-round presence.

Every plant choice was made with dual purposes: visual impact and maintenance efficiency. This garden will become more beautiful as it matures, requiring less intervention over time.

The transformation: when everything clicks

The reaction from Chris and Leoni says everything: “It is wonderful and lifts me every time I come into the kitchen!” said Chris. “It’s beautiful, thank you.” said Leoni.

This captures exactly what professional garden design should achieve. It’s not just about creating something beautiful to look at—it’s about enhancing daily life, adding genuine value to your property investment, and creating a space that brings joy for years to come.

Investment Intelligence: The Numbers That Matter

This project perfectly demonstrates why professional garden design represents such sound financial sense:

  • Property value enhancement: A professionally designed garden typically adds 15-20% to property values in desirable locations like Canley
  • Maintenance efficiency: Strategic plant selection and proper infrastructure mean lower ongoing costs
  • Longevity: Professional design and installation create gardens that improve rather than deteriorate over time

Why Professional Design Makes the Difference

This project showcases several advantages that only come with professional expertise:

Technical problem-solving: Identifying and properly addressing the drainage issue prevented thousands in potential future remedial work

Local knowledge: Understanding Coventry’s microclimates, soil conditions, and architectural context

Design integration: Creating cohesive spaces that enhance rather than compete with your property

Quality partnerships: Access to skilled craftspeople and premium suppliers that ensure proper execution
